Brush

The City of McAllen collects brush separately from regular garbage and recyclables. The items picked up during brush collection are cut tree limbs and bagged yard waste. Tree limbs should be no longer than 5 feet in length and yard waste should be placed inside heavy paper lawn and leaf bags. These bags are available free of charge from the City. The City’s goal is to prevent dumping yard waste into the landfill by creating mulch and compost out of the brush. The mulching and composting takes place at the McAllen Composting Facility. Please do not mix brush with garbage, plastic bags or other materials. Brush should be placed away from your blue and black containers, as well as all utility meters and fences.  Leaves and small twigs should also be bagged in compostable brown bags.

Bulky Waste

Bulky waste collection is provided for items too large to fit into the trash container, such as large appliances, furniture, etc. For collection of refrigerators and/or AC units make sure that the units are properly discharged of Freon and tagged by a certified technician. Non-tagged items will not be collected. Hazardous materials, construction debris and tires will not be collected. Plastic yard bags will be collected as bulky waste.

Schedule

It takes crews one month to pick up brush and bulky waste from the entire City.  The City is divided into four quadrants. Each quadrant is given a full week for collection.  Brush and bulky waste is picked up based on a full week schedule. The month’s collection starts with the first “full” week in which Monday through Friday all fall within the same month.
