McAllen TX:Black and Blue Bins
The City of McAllen provides trash and recycling bins for all residents. The garbage bins are black in color and have wheels for easy transport. Each bin also has a lid on top to guard against bugs, rodents and the weather. The recycling bins are blue in color and also have wheels and a lid. One black and one blue bin make up a complete set for all residential homes. The black and blue two bin sets may also be used for residents at smaller apartment buildings which don’t use the larger, metallic green garbage dumpsters.

Black Bin Details
The black bin is for all garbage. These are for items we normally throw away from the kitchen, the bathroom, and from heavy cleaning projects. It is best to use garbage bags with the black bin. The use of garbage bags keeps the bin cleaner, cuts down on bugs/rodents, makes it easier to pick up the garbage, and keeps debris from blowing out of the bin as it is being emptied. Residents with alleys keep their black bins in the alley. The black bin is ready whenever a resident fills up a home trash bag. Make sure there is three feet of space to the right and left sides of your black bin. The space is needed for the pick-up claw of the garbage truck on collection days. Position the black bin so the wheels point toward the house.
Blue Bin Details
The blue bin is for all recyclables – everything that can be reduced, reused or recycled. This means most things made of paper and glass, as well as many things made of plastic and food cans.
Paper
Newspapers, magazines, paper receipts, junk mail, cardboard inserts. Anything paper or cardboard not stained by oil or food. Most used pizza boxes will have to go into the black bin with real garbage.
Glass
Any color of glass. It doesn’t matter. If it’s a glass pickle jar we’ll even take the metal lid.
Plastic
Plastics #1 and #2 - Most plastic containers are #1 or #2. Look on the bottom of a plastic milk carton or water bottle. You’ll find a small triangle with a number in the middle. All 1’s and 2’s can be recycled. All other numbers go into the black bin.
Metal Cans
All food cans. Tuna fish, cat food, etc… Just rinse out the residue.
Simply throw all of the items mentioned above into the blue bin and you’re done. No need for garbage bags. Both bins are picked up on the same day every week. It’s easy to find your pick-up day.
