Evanston IL:Why is my water discolored?

Jump to: navigation, search

Discolored water is frequently the result of fire hydrant flushing.  Fire hydrants are flushed by the Fire Department annually between May and October to ensure they are working properly. Whenever discolored water is observed, we recommend that you run the water for 10 to 15 minutes until the water clears up. If at all possible, run the cold water in the basement first. This way you are clearing the pipeline from the entry point in your home to the first tap and preventing the discolored water from moving throughout you house plumbing.

Discolored water can also occur after construction or repair of water main or service in your area or if you have done work on your plumbing system. Flushing the water from your pipes as outlined above is recommended for these reasons as well.

Another reason occurs when only your hot water is discolored.  This indicates an issue with your hot water heater, and you may want to contact a plumber to investigate.   If the water does not clear after flushing for 15 minutes, contact 3-1-1.
