A sewer gas smell can come up through floor drains. Drains are equipped with a trap shaped like a U to prevent this occurrence. Under normal circumstances, the U stays filled with water, which prevents the odor from coming up in the house. However, if the U trap completely dries out, the gas that causes the odor can enter into living spaces. In order to remedy this, pour a bucket of water down the floor drains periodically. This will keep the trap full.
